Inspired by the collection of gripping, lyrical dream diaries of French-Algerian philosopher and critic Hélène Cixous’s Dream I Tell You, Gabrielle Herbst’s new opera, BODILESS, conjures the ebb and flow of the conscious and unconscious in dreaming — and from it unravels the emotional and symbolic representations of everyday life. With graceful melodies and dissonance alike, and through moments of serenity and chaos, BODILESS poses the existential question – What is life without a body? – and the dynamic new opera for a new generation of new sensibilities offers in voice and in song the possibility to openly express and be what the body cannot.
The composer will sing in this world premiere along with singers Ariadne Greif and Lucy Dhegrae and Contemporaneous. The work was commissioned by Roulette and the Jerome Foundation.
